Help Miss VT Teen USA Get To Nationals
Miss Vermont Teen USA is hoping you can help her represent Vermont in the national competition.
Brittany Kelemen, 18 of Richmond, took home the state title last month.
She's two weeks away from the national competition in the Bahamas, where 36 family and friends will help cheer her on.
"The people that are coming it's just going to be amazing to have a huge cheering section and the judges will get to see that Vermont actually counts," Kelemen said.
But she needs money to get to nationals. So with the help of Bridge Street Hair, Bridge Street Cafe, and TD Banknorth, she's holding a fundraiser. A ticket cost $15.
Where: West Monitor Barn, 1949 East Main St., Richmond

National spotlight/Alamogordo grad to compete for Miss Teen USA
Alexis Duprey has competed in beauty pageants since she was 7 years old. Now, she will be competing on the national stage.
Duprey, an 18-year-old Alamogordo High School graduate, will represent New Mexico at the upcoming Miss Teen USA pageant. She will compete against 51 other teens on July 31 at the Atlantis Paradise Island Resort in the Bahamas.
The winner will be crowned by Stevi Perry, a Hamburg, Ark., native who won the title last year.
"I'm actually really looking forward to it," Duprey said. "I've never been to a national pageant, as long as I've been doing it. I've only been in local and state pageants, but I think I have a pretty good idea of what to expect."
The Miss Teen USA pageant is part of the Miss Universe Organization, owned by real-estate developer and TV personality Donald Trump. According to a news release on the pageant's Web site, the organization is a joint venture between Trump and NBC Universal that also features the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants. The new Miss Universe will be crowned Aug. 23, also in the Bahamas.
Duprey earned her chance to compete for Miss Teen USA by winning the Miss New Mexico Teen USA crown Jan. 17 at the Inn of the Mountain Gods in Mescalero. It was her third attempt after finishing fourth runner-up and third runner-up in the previous two pageants.
Competing in the state pageant as Miss Southern New Mexico, Duprey beat Brianna Morphin for the title. Morphin competed as Miss Northern New Mexico, which created a bit of confusion once the winner was announced.
"It was funny because we've been doing the pageant together for three years," she said. "We started at the same time and ended at the same time, so she told me 'There's nobody else I'd rather lose to.' If she won, I would have told her the same thing."
According to Karen Duprey, Alexis' mother who also coaches pageant contestants, Alexis is the first Alamogordo native to become Miss New Mexico Teen USA. For winning the state title, Alexis Duprey received a $1,000 cash prize, a $1,500 wardrobe allowance and the traditional crown and sash, among other prizes. It also secured her spot in the Bahamas.
On July 31, Duprey will compete in three phases of competition evening wear, swimwear and interview with the judges. This pageant varies from the Miss America organization. In Miss USA, contestants do not compete in a talent competition and they do not need their own platform in which to compete, Duprey said. Titleholders support a platform the organization endorses, she added.
To be eligible for Miss Teen USA, Alexis Duprey said contestants must be older than 19 during their title reign. "She's got as much chance as anybody else," Karen Duprey said. "She'll do all right at this thing. At the very least, what an opportunity."
For the competition, Alexis Duprey said she'll wear a custom-made gown designed by dress maker Tony Bowls. She also wore a Bowls gown during the state pageant.
Duprey has also been working with Rosemarie Ferrara, a certified personal trainer at Alamo Shape, in order to stay physically fit.
Ferrara said she has been using interval training, which involves alternating short repetitions of high-intensity cardiovascular endurance and strength training. That type of workout is ideal for Duprey, Ferrara said, because Duprey comes from a cheerleading background, having been on the high school's varsity squad.
"With the cheerleaders, I know that they are athletes," Ferrara said. "They do squats and runs and lunges and pushups like bodybuilders and weightlifters do because they are lifting real weight over their heads. That's why she's able to do a lot of what I asked her to do right away."
Ferrara believes Duprey has a great shot at the national pageant.
"She's always a lady and she's always positive and upbeat in her demeanor," Ferrara said. "I think she has the presence that just a pretty girl or a smart girl (has). It's more than that. It's the whole package together.
"Her star power isn't about being pretty. It's about motivating people to do good, and I think that's where she will go."
The competition is more than looking good on stage. It also involves staying informed on current events, as judges could ask any range of questions during the interview.
"You have to know what's going on in the world," said Duprey, who plans on attending New Mexico State University in the fall. "You know that's probably not what people are thinking beauty queens reading the newspaper and checking the Internet."
Karen Duprey said the interview portion is one of the most important phases of competition.
"The interview, in my opinion, will win or lose it for you," she said. "You have a very little bit of time to make them know you and like you."
Alexis Duprey must complete her reign as Miss New Mexico Teen USA before she can compete in any other pageant. She hasn't ruled out competing in pageants in the future, but she's currently focused on winning the Miss USA Teen title.
"Well, of course, it would be cool to win. I'm not going to be just crushed or heartbroken if I don't win," she said. "I'm just really looking forward to the experience and the exposure and what I can gain from it. ... If I make top 15, that would just be the coolest thing ever."

Blansit goes for title of Miss Teen USA
By Lindsay Slater The Times-Journal | |
Published July 11, 2009
At some point, every little girl has dreamed of being a beauty queen and taking home the crown. That dream is becoming a reality for Fort Payne native Ali Blansit, as she will soon set off to the Bahamas to compete against 50 other girls for the title of Miss Teen USA.
Blansit won the Miss Alabama Teen USA crown in November.
In a November interview, Blansit said the huge win had not sunk in but said all of that is changing.
“With the pageant getting closer, I’m beginning to realize how big this is,” Blansit said. “I’m very excited.”
Blansit and her mother, Pam, will leave July 27 to head to Atlantis Paradise Island in Nassau, Bahamas.
“As soon as she gets off of the plane, she’ll be doing photos and interviews,” Pam Blansit said. “She’s going to be very busy.”
The preliminary competition for Ali Blansit will be July 30.
Ali Blansit will strut her stuff in an ivory evening gown by Sherri Hill and will also compete in the swimwear competition with a suit provided by Jamye Shaw.
At the opening of the final competition on July 31, the top 15 contestants will be announced based on scores from the previous day’s competitions.
“The top 15 will compete again in evening gown and swimwear,” Pam Blansit said. “From those 15, they will pick the top five.”
The top five will answer a question and the new Miss Teen USA will be chosen and crowned by last year’s winner, Stevi Perry, of Arkansas.
Pam Blansit said this time is different.
“We didn’t know what to expect going into the state competition,” Pam Blansit said. “This time, we are more familiar with the process, so it definitely makes it a little easier.”
Ali and Pam Blansit said the stress is high in getting ready for the pageant.
“Ali has been going back and forth to Birmingham meeting with the state director and a slew of other helpers from fitness trainers to dentists,” Pam Blansit said.
Pam Blansit won’t be able to help her daughter prepare when they get ready for the big evening.
“She’ll have to get herself ready,” Pam Blansit said. “But, the organization will provide her with an assistant that will stay with her from the time she gets off of the plane until the time she leaves.”
Ali Blansit said she and her mom have scoped out the competition through pictures.
“We’ve seen pictures of the other girls,” Pam Blansit said. “Knowing that this will be the best of the best makes it very scary.”
But, Ali Blansit said she is going to do her best and remain confident throughout.
“I can’t go in and let the other girls get me down,” Blansit said. “I accomplished the same thing the rest of the girls did, and now it’s just the best of best.”
Pam Blansit said should her daughter win the crown, she’ll leave for New York the following day for interviews and press conferences.
“I would just be the most excited mom in the world if she wins and they jet her off to stay with Donald Trump for a week,” Pam Blansit said. “She’ll be a small town girl in a huge world.”
Ali Blansit said for all the little girls who are out there dreaming to keep on dreaming.
“This is my dream, and I’m living it,” Ali Blansit said. “I told my mom when I was very young that I would compete for Miss Teen USA one day.”
“For all the little girls out there, work hard and be dedicated to your dream and it can be accomplished.”

Pelham's Miss Teen N.H. sets sights on national crown
Posted: 07/10/2009 12:23:05 PM EDT
PELHAM -- There was a time when Amber Faucher dreaded going to high school.
While freshman year is notorious for being a rough transition period, Faucher became the target of bullying by other students.
"It was pretty bad. In the end, it makes you a stronger person," Faucher said of bullying.
Now, Faucher, a recent Pelham High School graduate, is using her status to prevent bullying.
Faucher, who was crowned Miss New Hampshire Teen USA 2009 in November, has made it her mission to speak to middle-school and high-school students about anti-bullying initiatives.
Most recently, she spoke to middle-school students in Whitefield, where students said Faucher is their role model. "I was glad to be able to give these kids someone to look up to, to tell them that they can be successful even though people are trying to put them down," Faucher said.
Faucher, 18, could soon become a role model for teens across the country.
On July 27, she will travel to the Bahamas, where she will compete in the Miss Teen USA contest at the Atlantis resort on Paradise Island. The competition is run by the Miss Universe Organization.
Faucher will compete against Miss Teen winners from 49 other states in categories that include swimsuit and evening-gown modeling and answering interview questions.
The winner of the contest receives a scholarship to the New York Film Academy, as well as other prizes.
Faucher said she's the only contestant from Pelham to win the Miss Teen New Hampshire title.
She first entered the contest at age 14, after receiving a marketing postcard in the mail that said, "This could be you." She was named third runner-up, and later re-entered the contest at age 16, when she earned first runner-up.
But her strong will and determination to win prompted her to enter the contest for a third time. "I set a goal for myself and I wouldn't give up until I got it," Faucher said.
Faucher was crowned Miss Teen New Hampshire on Nov. 2, 2008, at age 17. "As soon as I heard my name I didn't believe it -- I started crying," Faucher said.
In the fall, Faucher will attend Southern New Hampshire University. She plans to major in criminal justice and pursue a prelaw degree.
If she wins the Miss Teen USA contest, Faucher said she will continue to educate teens about bullying while working with the American Heart Association to promote heart-health awareness.
Faucher said she's grateful for all the people who have helped her succeed and is looking forward to giving back.
"Everyone I've met has given me something to take with me," Faucher said. "I want to help the community and raise awareness."
The public can cast a popularity vote for their favorite Miss Teen USA contestant. To vote for Amber Faucher go to www.missuniverse.com/missteenusa.

Stevi teen competes for Miss Teen USA title
A Stevensville teenager is asking for the prayers and good luck wishes from everyone in Montana.
Haley Boyer, the reigning Miss Montana Teen USA, will represent her home state in the Miss Teen USA pageant in the Bahamas on July 31.
The Miss Teen USA pageant is for young women ages 15 through 19 and is a part of the Miss Universe Organization owned by Donald Trump.
“She’s a Montana girl through and through and she’s going to go to the Bahamas in July and do everything she can to bring that title home to all Montanans,” Scott Boyer, Haley’s father said.
The 18-year-old said growing up in Montana has given her strengths that contestants from other states won’t have.
“We all have really high work ethic but I’m not afraid to get rough and dirty,” Haley said. “Growing up in Montana I’ve learned to get the job done.”
Participating in rodeos and riding horses has also taught Haley perseverance and patience, something she said has prepared her for the competition.
Haley and 50 other contestants will be judged based on a personal interview with the judges prior to the on-stage competition that includes swimsuit and evening gown contests.
Haley has competed in the state pageant three unsuccessful times before her win in September 2008. In 2006 she won an award for physical fitness and Miss Congeniality. In 2007, she was first runner up.
“By now, most would have given up, but not Haley,” her father said.
“It was really difficult to stay motivated but I continued to watch the pageant on TV and saw what the girls were doing for their communities and wanted to get involved.” Haley said. “I had to wait a few years, but it was worth it.”
Since being crowned, Haley has completed a lot of volunteer work, a required duty as the crown holder and something she said she loves to do.
Haley has worked with Habitat for Humanity, the Special Olympics, The Ronald McDonald House and has been a motivational speaker at state-wide high schools.
“I speak to students about goal setting because it’s very important and everyone should have goals,” Haley said.
Haley has competed in pageants since she was 11 years old when she won Little Miss Rodeo Western Montana in 2002. She went on to win Ravalli County Rodeo Junior Queen in 2004, Miss Rodeo Western Montana Princess 2005 and Miss Ravalli County 2007.
“I’ve always been into horses and held rodeo titles, but I wanted to move into beauty pageants,” Haley said. “I’ve always had my eye on Miss USA and reaping the benefits of competing.”
Due to the lack of trainers for hair styles, make-up application, stage presence and modeling, Haley has had to travel outside Montana to find the best resources for her.
“I needed to find where the winners are training and do a lot of research and traveling,” she said. “That’s been the most difficult part.”
Haley hopes to shatter the stereotype that Montana is not a competition state by continuing to train until the competition and using her high level of work ethic she has set for herself.
Haley trains by practicing her stage presence, interview and presentation. She said she wants to be polished and the best possible self she can be by the time she arrives to the Bahamas.
“I have to have extreme leadership skills and abilities because Miss Teen USA is a speaker and a leader that works with organizations and charities,” Haley said. “I have to be on top of my game. I have to be that person before I can win that title.”
Haley graduated from Hamilton High School in May and will be attending cosmetology school in Dallas, Texas this fall, unless she is crowned Miss Teen USA.
The winner receives an assortment of gifts but also a one-year stay in Trump Towers in New York City and a $100,000 scholarship to the New York Film Academy.
Haley said if she wins she will have the opportunity to network, self-improve and prepare for her future career.
Haley’s future in pageants depends on where life takes her.
“I don’t want to say I’m done, I’m just not sure,” Haley said.
Haley said her life goals are to be successful, own a house and car, travel and be proud of the work she does.
The pageant will not be aired on television. Check the Ravalli Republic after the competition for results.

Miller picks pageant over finals
Codi Miller decided she wasn’t going to compete at the National High School Finals Rodeo long before she started the spring season.
Codi Miller decided she wasn’t going to compete at the National High School Finals Rodeo long before she started the spring season.
Ironically, after Miller made that choice, the Bowman County sophomore began building a sizeable lead in the North Dakota High School Rodeo Association’s pole bending standings with the help of a consistent gray mare named Fancy.
Yet, when the option of going to nationals in Farmington, N.M., or competing in the Miss Teen USA pageant arose — Miller was named Miss Teen North Dakota around Thanksgiving last year — the Amidon 16-year-old chose to fulfill her obligations to the pageant.
While Miller hopes she can reach the NHSFR sometime in the future, she said thinking about the success she’s had in both the rodeo and pageant world in the past year is a bit overwhelming.
“Sometimes I can’t describe the feeling I get when I think about how good I’m doing in rodeo and getting to go to the Bahamas too,” Miller said.
Miller will vie for the coveted Miss Teen USA crown at the July 31 pageant at Nassau, Bahamas, instead of making a trip to the NHSFR that seemed quite likely based on her success this season.
She’ll end her rodeo season this weekend at the North Dakota State Finals Rodeo in Bowman because the final days of the NHSFR coincide with her obligations to the pageant.
With 77 season points and a 15-point lead over runner-up Mamie Kieson, Miller has a good chance of holding onto her lead in the pole bending standings and winning a state title, which she said became her goal after deciding not to attend the NHSFR.
She has also been encouraging to other competitors trying to fight their way into the top four of the standings, which would earn them an automatic trip to the NHSFR.
“Some of them came up to me and kiddingly told me they don’t like me cause I’m beating them,” Miller said. “I tell them not to give up.”
If those wanting to make a run at the NHSFR can take any other advice from Miller, it’s that being consistent works. She has proven this season that consistency over the course of a season can translate into a title run.
Miller has just one win — a 20.849-second run at Killdeer — but has placed and accumulated points at nearly every rodeo.
“I just ride like I ride at practice and Fancy seems to know what to do and she does it,” Miller said. “… Since I’ve been leading, I’ve just been riding her like I do at practice and I’ve been consistent. That’s helped at keeping me up at the top.”
Consistency is what Miller knows she’ll always get with Fancy, a horse whose age is unknown but the Miller family believes to be at least 26 years old based on discussions with the horse’s previous owners.
“Everybody always sees this little tiny horse at the rodeo jumping around,” she said. “I always ask people how old they think she is and they say, four. … She’s kind of a miracle horse.”
This weekend Miller is also trying to duplicate the past success cowgirls have had riding Fancy through the poles.
Miller’s 14-year-old sister, Kit, rode Fancy to a state championship in the North Dakota Junior High Finals Rodeo in Hebron earlier this month. Last season, Bowman County graduate Megan Torpen and Fancy finished as the state’s runner-ups.
“I’m just impressed how she can still do what she does, being as old as she is,” Kit Miller said. “That’s really impressive. There’s not many horses like her.”
Next season could prove interesting for the Millers, however. With Kit entering the high school ranks, the Millers plan to keep Fancy, who is owned by Bowman’s Laverne Kulseth.
“We may have to play Rock Paper Scissors to see how rides Fancy next year because we’ll both be in high school,” Codi Miller said.

Miss Sun Fun USA Pageant
I attended the 2010 Miss Sun Fun Pageants (photos coming soon!). This was my first experience at a Miss USA preliminary... Thirty-seven contestants competed for the titles of 2010 Miss Sun Fun and 2010 Miss Sun Fun Teen in conjunction with the 58th annual Sun Fun Festival.
The pageant was held at 6:30 p.m. on June 6 at the Myrtle Beach High School auditorium. This year’s theme is “Jewels of the Sea.”
All contestants were judged in three equally weighted categories: swimsuit, evening gown and interview. Important qualities include poise, personality, beauty of face and figure and the ability to speak articulately about the Grand Strand area, the release said.
Pageant winners will compete, expenses paid, in the Miss South Carolina USA and Miss South Carolina Teen USA pageants. Miss Sun Fun and Miss Sun Fun Teen also will represent the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, its member businesses and the Grand Strand throughout their reigns, participating in festivals, promotional trips and local events.

Education Rock Star
One of the most passionate advocates for education and its ability to change lives is Intel’s own Chairman of the Board, Craig Barrett. Yesterday we walked around the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair in Reno, Nevada, where Craig was rightly feted as the Intel ISEF Rock Star. He literally signed autographs and posed for pictures with dozens of people. After all the lights and cameras, Craig visited students at their projects to get a sampling of the amazing work being done around the world. The students explained their projects as he questioned how they worked, what inspired them to ask the questions that led to their research and, his infamous, “where do you plan to go to college?” The last question is usually a thinly veiled attempt to encourage them to attend Stanford.
One of the students he talked to was Amy David from Pinedale, Wyoming, whose research project studied how the brain is hit when a snow skier lands a jump. Amy is a competitive ski jumper and hopes to go to the Olympics one day. Check out Amy’s video here.

Teen is star-spangled singing success/Pageant winner's golden tones earn stadium gig
By JOHN WHARTON

Kasey Staniszewski of Waldorf, Miss Maryland Teen USA, sings the national anthem during the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs baseball team's season opener at Regency Furniture Stadium.
Her spike high heels planted on a dirt warning track, Charles County teenager Kasey Staniszewski, also known as Miss Maryland Teen USA 2009, stood securely waiting for her call to go behind home plate.
She sang the national anthem moments later, at the April 23 opening night for the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs before a packed house at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf.
She chatted and posed for pictures before and after her performance, among baseball legends Brooks Robinson and Earl Weaver, a local television news crew and photographers, before she rejoined her father who was seated for the moment in the front row. He's proud of his two daughters; Lindsay is Miss Southern Maryland.
"They just started everything when they were very young, and we just followed them," Greg Staniszewski said. "A lot of parents in the pageant industry pull the kids. We let the kids pull us."
Kasey, a 17-year-old senior at La Plata High School, has taken her abilities from early childhood theater and singing to statewide recognition, and a chance this summer at nationwide acclaim, as she volunteers in support of an array of charitable organizations.
Broadway songs remain her favorites, but she has now performed "The Star-Spangled Banner" in public about 50 times.
"The national anthem is a pretty difficult piece," she said as she sat at a Waldorf restaurant with her father an hour before the Blue Crabs game.
"I find that it tends to go up and down melodically. You really have to have a lot of breath support. I usually have a little vibrato in my voice. That can help with the higher notes."
If it's a difficult song to sing, it's also a very meaningful one to Staniszewski, who performed it at last year's Miss America pageant in Las Vegas and at Fort Meade early last month, as soldiers' families bid them farewell on a deployment to Iraq.
"It was really touching to see all of their support," she said. "The national anthem is one of my favorite songs, because it's such an honor to sing it."
When the two teams had finished assembling on the base paths before the Blue Crabs game, Staniszewski walked behind home plate, joined by the home team's on-field host John Roberts, and sang the national anthem.
A smattering of "Os" could be heard as she began the last verse, a tradition of Baltimore Orioles fans that Staniszewski said hasn't interfered with her delivery.
"It kind of varies," she said later of the provincial accompaniment. "People are more prone to doing it at baseball games. When I sang it in Las Vegas, nobody did it."
